PORT DESCRIPTION
Location: Located at the mouth of the Bosphorus on the Sea of Marmara. General overview: Istanbul is the principal port of Turkey. It comprises several ports making up two main sections:
Karakoy piers for passengers.
Haydarpasa port for cargo handling (See separate entry).
Traffic figures: Approx 3,400,000t of cargo handled annually.
Max size: Largest vessel handled: Approx 60,000grt.

NAVIGATION
Port limits: The port of Isatnbul, which is centered on the S entrance of Istanbul Bogazi, includes all of Istanbul Bogazi and its S approaches.
The S limit of the port is a line joining Baba Burnu (Lat 40°59’N, Long 028°33’E) to a point 2nm S of Baba Burnu and Yelkenkaya Burnu (Lat 40°45’N, Long 029°21’E).
The N limit of the port is a line joining Rumeli light (Lat 41°14’N, Long 029°07’E) and Anadolu light (2nm SE) at the entrance to Istanbul Bogazi.
Pilot: Compulsory. Available at either entrance of the Bosphorus.
Anchorages: A quarantine anchorage, a dangerous cargo anchorage and a passenger and dry cargo anchorage are established between Yesilkoy (Lat 40°58’N, Long 028°50’E) and Ahirkapi Burnu (7.5nm ENE).
The landing places of submarine cables are marked by inverted black anchor symbols on white boards, which are usually illuminated at night.
Vessels should not anchor within 1 cable of any submarine cable.
Tidal range and flow: Range 0.3m.
Dock density: 1025.
Weather: Prevailing winds: Variable.
VHF: VHF ch 16, 14 and 12.
Charts: BA 1198. Admiralty Pilot NP24.
Restrictions: Vessels carrying explosives or inflammable cargoes can berth at Zeytinburnu piers only.
Tankers, whether laden or empty, and vessels with dangerous cargoes should pass through Istanbul Bogazi during daylight hours only.
The min permitted distance between such vessels proceeding in the same direction is 5 cables. While waiting to make the passage, vessels from S must not proceed E of Ahirkapi Burnu; those from the Black Sea must remain more than 3nm N of the N limit off the port.
Tugs: There are 30 tugs available of up to to 2,700hp, including two fire-fighting tugs.
